Cylinder vacuum cleaners also tend to on average have more suction power due to the construction of the main housing, obviously this factor varies, its like asking how fast is a car but pound for pound there tends to be better suction in a tub. Another factor is the amount of force you can use to push down on when cleaning carpets. I like to scrub away on dirtier patches, the uprights have a limited amount of force you can administer down into the carpet, all these factors made sense to me to keep a tub.

After some reluctance I moved over to a well know British brand of uprights, made a purchase from a local retailer and took it home to test. I was amazed at the amount of dirt I picked up with one of these. I've attributed the increased cleaning power on uprights to the rotating bristles at the bottom which agitate the carpet pile, they gently beat and pulse through the area drawing dirt up to the surface which the vacuum sucks up instantly.
